What is the MSOE Mentor Program?

The MSOE Mentor Program was established more than 10 years ago to help incoming students adjust to college. The program gives new students a way to develop special bonds with MSOE faculty, staff and fellow students, enhancing their first year at MSOE.

New student mentees meet their mentor/peer mentor team and fellow mentees during new-student orientation, when the Mentor Program hosts a reception to welcome new students and their parents to campus.

Throughout the year, activities between mentors and mentees vary depending upon the interests of people in each mentee group. Typical examples of small-group activities include meeting regularly for lunch, dinner or study sessions; occasional outings to restaurants, and attendance at local athletic or cultural events. The underlying purpose of any activity is to help new students feel connected to the MSOE community and to make the first year of college a positive one.

Who are the Mentors?

A mentor is a MSOE faculty or staff member who has volunteered to work closely with new students, especially during their first quarter at MSOE. Each mentor teams up with at least one peer mentor, an upper-class MSOE student who has already experienced the triumphs and trials of the first year of college.

Each mentor/peer mentor team is assigned several new student mentees. After your first meeting, you immediately have a new group of friends!

How will the Mentor Program benefit you?

Mentors and peer mentors are friendly and helpful resources who can provide answers to some of the questions you may have as you are beginning college:

  1. How can I take advantage of tutoring services offered by the Learning Resource Center?
  2. Homework here seems so different from what I'm used to; how much time should I allot for studying?
  3. Who can answer some of my questions about my professional future?

In addition to the activities of individual mentor/mentee groups, the Mentor Program organizes educational and fun activities, events and programs that all mentees are encouraged to take part in. Participation in the Mentor Program can help you establish a very helpful network that you can maintain throughout your time at MSOE.
