English as a Second Language
(ESL) Services

esl.jpg - 23500 Bytes International and other ESL students can receive help with grammar, writing, pronunciation, and listening and conversational skills from the LRC's ESL coordinator. Students can get individual assistance or can attend the interactive study sessions designed for ESL students.

In addition to increasing students' knowledge of English, the ESL coordinator, along with other MSOE departments like Admission and Student Life, are working together to develop programs and resources for international students to help them clarify Americans' attitudes, customs and traditions. Information, advice and support are offered to help international students adapt to American culture and to life here at MSOE.

ESL Program

In addition to the services the ESL Coordinator provides for all students, the ESL Coordinator also directs the ESL program. This ESL program is designed for international students who do not have the minimum TOEFL required for MSOE admission. The program bridges the gap between the English language skills the international students possess and the skills they need to be academically successful at MSOE. The goal of the program is to improve the students' academic skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

International students whose TOEFL scores range between 173 and 213 (500-550 on the paper-based test) are required to participate in this year-long program. Students are required to take one reading/writing course and one listening/speaking course each quarter. In addition to taking the ESL courses, students will be allowed to take two MSOE courses related to their major. The students' academic advisors will help them chose those courses.
