Send your story to Adrian Lilly, senior writer, MSOE marketing and public affairs, at lilly@msoe.edu.

Here's what a few MSOE community members had to say ...

Richard Czubkowski '61
Chief Engineer; Manager, Mining Electrical Systems; Consulting Engineer
P&H Mining Equipment (Retired '01)

"State Fair week brings back memories. In 1958, I represented MSOE at its fair booth. We had a replica of the first US satellite, a small sphere with four extending antennas. It looked quite trivial compared to today's high-tech space hardware. However, 45 years ago it was of great interest and captured the attention of fair attendees.

"I attended MSOE from 1957 to 1961. I completed four years of schooling with tuition and books amounting to less than the $5,000 scholarship I received from the Harnischfeger Corp.

"Our motor and generator lab had rather large machines, which made learning very exciting. Bigger machines meant more power and more smoke. The famous loading device was a water box, a wooden rectangular box about 40 x 20 x 12 inches deep, filled with water and two sliding metal plates immersed in the water to carry the current. With this water rheostat one could vary the resistance by the distance between the plates.

"At very low resistance or when the plates were very close to each other, they could touch forming a steam bubble. I recall many comical incidences of sudden movements and shouts when the water went flying on the floor. Mr. Wiedner was older than the machines and saw all manner of mistakes. My other instructor, Mr. Frank Lofy, just let things happen, which made the course even more exciting. It was fun, exciting and we sure learned about motors, generators and controls with real man-sized machines. This truly was hands-on learning of the basics, which helped me with my designs for the next 40-plus years."

"My experience at MSOE was fantastic! After receiving an associate degree at MATC, I began evening classes at MSOE in 1984 working toward a bachelor's degree in industrial management. At the time I was working for Eaton Corp. in Milwaukee as a labor relations supervisor. A few years later I was given additional duties and received a promotion. I graduated (from MSOE) in 1988 with honors.

"I'm now working for Cooper Power Systems in Waukesha. Over my 10-year career with Cooper I have received several promotions. I credit much of my success to the education I received at MSOE.

"I never took the time to formally thank all of my professors at MSOE, so here it goes ... thanks a million! I think you did a great job with me."
