Study Abroad at
Lübeck University of Applied Sciences
Lübeck, Germany

Students in the electrical engineering, international business, or mechanical engineering program at MSOE have the opportunity to study in Germany during their junior year, through a unique agreement between MSOE and the Lübeck University of Applied Sciences, in Lübeck, Germany. The program often is called an exchange program, because Lübeck students also come to MSOE to study.

MSOE encourages its students to consider the opportunity this program offers. American business is competing on an international level like at no other time in history. And foreign companies are buying or forming alliances with American companies at a record pace, so there is a great likelihood MSOE graduates will do business with or even work for a foreign company. The graduate who has traveled internationally, speaks a foreign language or has an understanding of the cultures and traditions of other nations will have a marked advantage.

Key Features

  • All all courses are taught in English, but instruction in conversational German is given.
  • All course work transfers to the MSOE program and participation does not delay a student’s progress towards graduation.
  • Upon graduation, participating students will receive degrees, from both MSOE and the Lübeck University of Applied Sciences.

Program Description

MSOE students study at Lübeck from September through June of their junior year.

Electrical Engineering

The electrical engineering classes are very similar to those at MSOE, with the added cultural benefit of a class about German language and culture each semester. Students are in classes with their German counterparts for 30 hours per week. Many of the German students who are in classes with the MSOE program participants are themselves future exchange students who plan to study at MSOE the following year as seniors. There is great camaraderie among the students and the friendships that are formed. They also participate in organized cultural programs and tours of industrial companies throughout the year.

International Business

Lübeck, GermanyThe Bachelor of Science in International Business program is a four-year program of study built on the rich tradition of MSOE’s application-oriented philosophy and use of technology. It’s necessitated by the need to respond to future competitive challenges of business and the expectation that business leaders today should have a global perspective, work experience abroad, some foreign language fluency and an understanding of challenges that go beyond doing business in only one market.

The program provides a strong foundation for students in business and management, and the availability of a large number of elective courses for professional development in one of the following concentrations:

  • Computer Systems and Networking
  • Software Development
  • Marketing
  • Operations Management
Mechanical Engineering

All mechanical engineering classes in Germany have been developed to provide seamless credit toward baccalaureate degree progress at MSOE. In addition, a German designed course in Systematic Engineering Design and two opportunities for cultural immersion courses are offered. Many of the German students attending the mechanical engineering courses are those who plan to attend MSOE the following year. Upon completion of their junior year in Germany their senior year at MSOE, students will receive both the BSME degree from MSOE and the Diplom-Ingenieur from Lübeck University of Applied Sciences.

This program is a great opportunity to experience life abroad, and to develop multi-cultural skills -- highly valued by employers in an ever increasingly global economy. The overall cost is approximately the same as living and studying on the MSOE campus, and on-track students still graduate in four years.

The Lübeck school year is portioned into two semesters, with a five-week break between semesters, providing an excellent opportunity for travel throughout Europe. Europe’s sleek, high-speed trains make travel between major cultural attractions affordable and fast.

Lübeck University of Applied Sciences

Lübeck University of Applied Sciences has a tradition that goes back to 1808 when the first Navigation School was founded. It is similar to MSOE in that it is an applications-oriented university, with approximately the same number of students. It combines the availability of the latest technology with a nationally recognized level of expertise, providing students with a quality education and excellent professional opportunities following graduation.

Lübeck, Germany

Lübeck, GermanyFounded in 1134, Hansestadt Lübeck is a city of about 210,000 people, situated near the Baltic Sea. Lübeck is a center of commerce, industry and higher education, that is playing an increasingly important role in bringing together the people of Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Russia, the Baltic states and Poland. Much of its Middle Ages appearance still is intact in the older portion of town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city offers a variety of recreation to young people, with its many restaurants, cafes, cinemas, theaters, nightlife and its close proximity to Hamburg and the seaside resort suburb of Travemünde. Considered the cultural capital of the north, Lübeck offers a lively art scene, is the main venue for the world-famous Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival and plays host to Northern Film Days.

Cost

Participation costs about the same as attending MSOE, except for roundtrip transportation. Through an arrangement between the universities, a student pays tuition to MSOE. The cost of housing (usually off-campus residence suites) and meals is comparable to MSOE, and arrangements are made directly with Lübeck. And because participation doesn’t delay graduation from MSOE, there is no additional cost for tuition.

Qualifications

Participants must be in good academic standing, have taken the prerequisite course work and cannot be on academic probation at the time of departure for Germany.

Before Departure

Sophomore students attend information meetings, and meet one-on-one with the program director to be sure they meet the academic requirements. During the Spring Quarter, students attend preparatory sessions where they will get details about German cultural norms, food, language, money, etc.
