Milwaukee is located on roughly the same latitude as Eugene, Oregon; Grand Rapids, Michigan; Boston, Massachusetts; and Genoa, Italy. Lake Michigan, one of the largest freshwater lakes in the world, moderates temperatures, taking the sizzle out of the summer sun and warming winter winds. Average precipitation is 31 inches (79 centimeters). The area receives 41 inches (104 centimeters) of snowfall, which equals slightly less than 5 inches (13 centimeters) of rain. Students from tropical regions will need to make major adjustments to the winter temperatures. Appropriate winter clothing will be needed and may be purchased in Milwaukee.
